Miscellaneous: The Sound of /s/

In many words, the sound of /s/ is spelled with s, or sc, and it is often spelled this way when it is at the beginning of a word. The /s/ sound can also be spelled with c when followed by i, or e. The spelling ss is usually used in the middle, or at the end of a word.
