Grief, Grace and the Power of Our Words
Ephesians 4:29-30
Summary:
Have you ever been truly hurt by something a person said to you? Maybe they were harsh or they made fun of you. Do remember how it felt? How about the last time someone truly encouraged you with their words? Our words can either be a means of tearing others down or building others up, and only the Holy Spirit inside us can change the way we speak to each other. Let's think about how:
1.Our words can be a means of spiritual damage to others:
a. They corrupt the hearer
b. They grieve the Holy Spirit
2.Our words can be a means of spiritual strength to others:
a. They build up
b. They are a means of grace
3.The Gospel gives the power for transformed speech:
a. the presence and power of the Holy Spirit changes us
b. The hope of redemption can give us power for new speech
Verse: Ephesians 4:29 (ESV)
29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
