Geography: Selby

Key points of interest in Selby, North Yorkshire, England. The name of this parish and market town in the East Riding of Yorkshire first appeared in written form in the early Yorkshire Charters of 1030. The toponym derives from the pre-7th century Old Norse words selja, meaning willow and "-by", a farm or settlement. During the Middle Ages the area was under the control of the Vikings, and fell under the sway of Danelaw. QUOTATION King Henry I was born in Selby in 1068.
