Geography: Howden

Key points of interest in Howden, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The name Howden derives from the pre-7th century Danish-Viking compound term "heafod-denu", literally meaning "the head of the valley". This area fell under the Northern Danelaw for many centuries (The Internet surname database, c. 1980–2014). Nevil Shute Norway, novelist and aeronautical engineer, worked for the Airship Guarantee Company between World War I and II. He was a member of the team that developed the first R100, a British airship that was intended for commercial use on British Empire routes as part of the Imperial Airship Scheme. The airship’s construction took place at the RNAS Air Station Howden which had its base at a remote location three miles from Howden. Shute met with some criticism when he, in 1954, wrote in his autobiography, Slide Rule: Autobiography of an Engineer: "The lads were what one would expect, straight from the plough, but the girls were an eye-opener. They were brutish and uncouth, filthy in appearance and in habits. … I can only record the fact that these girls straight off the farms were the lowest types that I have ever seen in England, and incredibly foul-mouthed."
