The famed Victorian novelist, Charles Dickens, visited Malton many times. In July 1843 he stayed for three weeks at Easthorpe Hall, which was a palatial manor house close to the town. Much admiring the place, he wrote: “I am quite serious in saying that this is the most remarkable place of its size in England, and immeasurably the most beautiful.”.
