Redemption Accomplished
Ephesians 1:7-8
Do you know what a slave is? A slave is a person who is forced to be a servant of another; in fact the slave is the property of another person! Sadly slavery still exists in some parts of the world. In Jesus' day many people were slaves. A slave usually could only be set free if someone purchased their freedom. This is where we get the word redeem - to purchase a person's freedom by paying what is called a ransom price. Before Jesus saves us, we are slaves to sin, and the Bible tells us that Jesus paid the ransom price to redeem us - to set us free from sin! Let's think about it:
1. The deep problem: we are slaves
2. The costly price: Jesus' own blood
3. The glorious result: forgiveness
4. The bottomless well: God's lavish grace
Verse: Ephesians 1:7 (ESV)
7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,
