Widnes
Key points of interest in Widnes, Halton, Cheshire, England. The name Widnes is usually thought to have evolved from the Danish words vid, meaning wide, and noese, meaning nose. The ‘wide nose’ is considered to refer to the headland protruding into the River Mersey. However, as the projection is relatively narrow, another possible explanation for the name is that the first half derives from the Danish ved, meaning a wood, which could refer to the trees covering the promontory (“Widnes”, [s.d.]). QUOTATION
Melanie C, one of the famous, but now disbanded, pop group Spice Girls, completed her schooling in Widnes at the Fairfield High School. In the song “First Day of My Life”, she poignantly sings, “Will I find salvation in the arms of love? / Will it stop me searching? / Will it be enough? // I don’t want your sympathy” (Chambers & Iglesias, [s.d.]).
