American Claims an Empire. In the late 1890s, American newspapers are running senstational stories about Spain's harsh rule of Cuba. Such articles anger Americans. Among those willing to fight for Cuba's freedom are a goup of volunteers, the Rough Riders. Led bu future president Teddy Roosevelt, the Rough Riders become a model for others to follow.
